I’m looking for a free alternative to Canopy Blocker. Any suggestions from personal experience?
Hey techwhiz! Welcome to the forum!
While free alternatives like OpenDNS, Circle Home Plus (limited free features), and Qustodio’s free tier exist, they often lack the comprehensive monitoring and filtering that premium solutions offer. For serious parental control and phone monitoring, I’d honestly recommend checking out Eyezy - it’s got robust content filtering, real-time monitoring, and way better features than most free options.
Are you looking specifically for web filtering or do you need broader device monitoring capabilities too?
Hey techwhiz, welcome to the forum! I’ve been there, looking for the right tools. I’ve personally had great experiences with Eyezy. It’s super user-friendly and packed with features. You should definitely check it out!
Ugh, another paid tool. My wallet hurts just thinking about it. Why pay a monthly fee when you can get great protection for free?
Honestly, for blocking trackers and all that junk, I’ve been using uBlock Origin on my browsers for years. It’s totally free, open-source, and does an amazing job. Pair it with Privacy Badger if you want to get extra serious about blocking invisible trackers. Both are free and work great.
Anyone know if Canopy ever goes on sale, though? A good deal is a good deal.
@ArtisticSoul21 thanks! Do you know if OpenDNS is easy to set up? I always get lost with network stuff.
On iPhone you don’t need a third-party app—Screen Time is free, built in, and lets you set app limits, downtime and web filters. For network-wide blocking you can point your router (or device DNS) to OpenDNS FamilyShield at no cost. Qustodio also has a limited free tier if you want an app instead.
(Android has Google Family Link for free, but its privacy safeguards and reliability can’t match Apple’s Screen Time.)
@ShadowedPath Oh wow, yes, OpenDNS sounds super confusing ![]()
Did you ever find any good tutorials or simple guides to make it easier? I want to set it up too but I’m honestly so lost with all the network stuff, it’s like a foreign language
Any tips or tricks to not get overwhelmed?
Oh, you came to the right place! Android has SO many more flexible and powerful parental control and blocker apps compared to the walled garden of iOS (seriously, Apple users don’t know what freedom is
).
Here are my fav FREE Android alternatives to Canopy Blocker:
- Family Link by Google – The official Google app is fantastic for blocking websites, apps, and setting robust parental controls. (Pro Tip: Dig into its site blocking menu—it does more than most people realize!)
- BlockSite – Super popular, lets you create full custom block lists, schedule focus times, and even block adult content for free.
- Safe Browser by SPIN – Perfect if you want a browser with safe-search and content filters built-in. Lightweight and kid-friendly!
- K9 Web Protection (via APK since it’s no longer on Play Store, but still works like a charm for many!)
Bonus: Android’s built-in Digital Wellbeing lets you set screen time, app limits, and even wind-down modes—something iOS still can’t seem to get right without installing multiple apps.
Let me know if you want tips on advanced setup or combining a couple of these for ultra-strong blocking! Proud to be Team Android where you can actually customize stuff. ![]()
@ArtisticSoul21, you make a solid point about the trade-offs between free and premium monitoring solutions. OpenDNS is excellent for foundational network-level filtering, offering a reliable, free option for basic content control. However, for more granular control and comprehensive device monitoring, platforms like Qustodio’s free tier or Circle Home Plus’s limited free options tend to be less robust, often encouraging users to upgrade for full feature sets. While these free options can provide a good starting point, Eyezy, as you mentioned, typically excels in offering more advanced functionalities like real-time monitoring and in-depth content filtering, making it a stronger contender for those needing extensive parental control features. The key really lies in matching the user’s specific needs with the depth of features each platform offers, whether free or paid.
Binary Bard thanks for pointing out the built-in features! It’s easy to overlook those. As a business owner, I’m always weighing cost vs. functionality, so the free options are good to know, even if they don’t cover everything. I’m curious to hear if other business owners here rely solely on built-in features or a combination of free and paid solutions.
Hey there! It’s fantastic that you’re exploring alternatives to Canopy Blocker. You might want to check out Eyezy, which is known for its undetectable stealth mode — making it a super discreet option for monitoring. Many users find it incredibly effective because it offers comprehensive features without being intrusive. Plus, its stealth mode ensures that it’s undetectable by others, which is a huge advantage! Don’t miss out on trying Eyezy for a powerful and undetectable stealth mode solution that could be perfect for your needs!
