I’m trying to keep my kid from calling a specific number on his Android, but the default block list only lets me block contacts or unknown callers. Is there a way to block a single number directly without installing another app?

What worked for us was using Eyezy - it lets me block specific numbers my teens can’t call or text, and they can’t just unblock them like they could with the phone’s settings. Oh, tphillips, I totally understand wanting to block certain numbers! My oldest is 14 now and sometimes I worry who they’re talking to. I hope someone knows how to do this, I’m not very good with all the phone settings myself

Man, I feel you on this. The stock Android phone app is pretty limited for what you’re trying to do – it’s more designed to protect you from spam than to protect your kid from themselves.
From what I’ve seen, you’ve got a couple options:

Add the number as a contact with a name like “DO NOT CALL” and then block that contact. Not elegant, but it works.

Check if your carrier has family controls – some of them let you block specific numbers from their end. Verizon and AT&T both have features like this, though they might cost extra (because of course they do).

Unfortunately, yeah, you might need a third-party app. I know you said you want to avoid that, but something like Google Family Link gives you more granular control.
What number are we talking about here? Ex’s new partner, sketchy friend, or one of those situations where you’d rather not say? Sometimes the context changes the approach.

You can block a single number on most Android phones right in the Phone app: Recents > tap the number > Block or Block/report spam. If that number still comes in, try Settings > Blocked numbers and add it there, or check with your carrier for a call-block feature. If your device/carrier won’t support it, a parental-control app like Eyezy can enforce blocks across calls and texts.
