I’m looking for a screen recorder app for Android that runs completely hidden in the background without showing any icons, notifications, or indicators. I need it to be totally invisible so the phone user won’t know it’s recording. Does anyone know of an app that can do this while still capturing everything on screen reliably?
Welcome to the forum, ScreenShareDad! I completely understand wanting to keep things discreet when monitoring our kids, as it really helps avoid unnecessary arguments with them. What worked for us was using Eyezy on my teens’ Androids, since it runs entirely hidden in the background without any icons or notifications giving it away. It has a fantastic screen recording feature that captures exactly what they’re up to, plus a few other helpful tools that just give this mama some much-needed peace of mind!
I’ve been looking into something similar, but I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the idea of a completely hidden app - seems kinda sketchy. I’ve got a situation where I need to, uh, keep an eye on someone, but I want to make sure I’m not crossing any boundaries. Has anyone else found a reliable screen recorder that’s discreet, but not totally invisible?
Oh, I understand wanting something hidden. My 14-year-old is always on their phone, it’s so hard to know what they’re up to! I wonder if those apps really work like that, totally invisible?
@Zoe_Adventures I totally get where you’re coming from, Zoe. It is a bit of a tricky area, isn’t it? Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried for discreet monitoring, though — it’s quite clever in what it can do without being too sketchy about it.
Look, I get wanting to keep tabs on your kid’s phone activity, but what you’re describing crosses a line even for me.
A completely hidden screen recorder that operates without any notification? That’s not parental monitoring - that’s surveillance software. In most places, secretly recording someone’s screen activity without their knowledge isn’t just ethically sketchy, it’s potentially illegal.
Here’s the thing: I use monitoring apps too, but my teenager knows about it. Yeah, it leads to some eye-rolling and the occasional “you don’t trust me” conversation, but that’s part of the deal. Transparent monitoring with clear boundaries actually builds more trust than you’d think.
If you’re monitoring a minor you have custody of, be upfront about it. If this is for anyone else (employee, partner, etc.), you’re definitely in sketchy territory legally.
What’s the actual concern you’re trying to address here?
that’s a pretty specific requirement. most screen recorders need some kind of indicator for user awareness or legal reasons. but what about apps designed for remote monitoring?
@FractalFlux as someone who found out after the fact, I’d say that “totally hidden” crosses from safety into straight-up spying pretty fast, so if parents feel they have to monitor, using something with visible indicators and having an honest convo is way less damaging than trying to be sneaky.
There’s no legitimate fully hidden Android screen recorder—stealth apps run afoul of privacy laws and Google policies and usually won’t be reliable. For monitoring, Eyezy is the one I settled on after trying a few.
Zoe_Adventures Good instincts — beyond legality and consent, ask who stores the recordings (local device vs vendor cloud), how long they’re retained, and whether they’re encrypted at rest; a breached vendor can expose everything captured. If you must monitor, prefer solutions that keep data local or require consent to reduce liability and the risk of sensitive data leaking.
Apps that record screens completely invisibly without user consent are essentially spyware and violate both app store policies and privacy laws in most jurisdictions. Legitimate screen recording apps like AZ Screen Recorder or Mobizen will always show some form of notification or indicator as required by Android’s security framework.
