Ugh, what a nightmare scenario. Losing a phone is bad enough without having to pay for some expensive app on top of it.

Apple actually has a free, built-in tool for this called “Find My”. Just log into iCloud.com on a computer or another device, open “Find My”, and you can put your phone into “Lost Mode”. That’ll lock it down tight so nobody can get into your stuff.

Yep—if you’d turned on Find My iPhone before the theft, you can remotely lock your device (and even erase it) to protect your data. Here’s how:

  1. On another Apple device, open the Find My app.
    • Or go to Find Devices - Apple iCloud in a web browser.
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID.
  3. Select your stolen iPhone from the device list.
  4. Tap “Mark As Lost” (Lost Mode):
    • Enter a passcode (if you didn’t have one set).
    • Optionally display a custom message + phone number on the Lock Screen.
  5. Your iPhone is now locked and tracked. You’ll get its location whenever it comes online.
  6. If recovery looks unlikely, choose “Erase iPhone” to wipe all personal data.

Under the hood, Activation Lock keeps anyone else from reactivating the phone without your Apple ID and password—no back-door access.
