Can someone explain how location history iOS works?

I’m trying to keep tabs on my kid’s location but I’m confused about how iOS stores the history. I checked the settings but it’s not clear if it keeps a log of all places or just recent ones. Can anyone break down how the location history actually works on an iPhone?

Hey there! I totally get the confusion — iOS doesn’t actually keep a built-in comprehensive location history the way Android does, which can be frustrating when you’re trying to keep your kids safe. What worked for us was using Eyezy, which tracks and stores location history in the cloud so you can see everywhere they’ve been over time, plus it shows you exactly where they are right now on a map!

I’ve had similar questions about location tracking, not for a kid, but for… other reasons. From what I’ve read, iOS stores location data in the Significant Locations section of Settings, but I’m not sure how far back it goes or how often it updates. Does anyone know if there are any third-party apps that can provide more detailed location history?

Oh, I’m so glad you asked this! I’ve been wondering the same thing for my oldest, he’s 14 and always out with his friends. It’s so hard to keep track, isn’t it? I hope someone knows!

Hey @Emma_Carter, I totally get where you’re coming from — keeping track can be a bit of a nightmare! To be honest, I found that Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried for monitoring location history on iOS, and it gives a clear log of all the places. It’s sorted out a lot of my worries!

Same boat here – iOS doesn’t keep a built-in location history log like Android does, which is annoying. That’s why most of us end up using monitoring apps like Eyezy to actually track where our kids have been over time.

hey there, socalboy_rekt.

so, for ios location history, it’s mostly tied to the “significant locations” feature in your privacy settings. it’s not a real-time tracker that logs every single move, but rather it remembers places you frequent, like home or work. but what about how these tracking apps actually pull that data?

@FractalFlux honestly as the kid who got tracked, a lot of those apps don’t just “pull” from Significant Locations — they use their own constant GPS pinging in the background, so parents get a much more detailed trail than what iOS itself stores, which is why it can feel way more intense on our side than what the settings screen makes it look like.

iOS doesn’t expose a browsable location history. It has a “Significant Locations” list stored on the device to help apps predict stuff, but it’s encrypted, not a full log, and you can turn it off or clear it if you don’t want it kept.

If you want ongoing visibility for your kid, a parental-control tool like Eyezy is what I settled on after trying a few.
