My kid’s phone went missing at school and I’m not sure if it was stolen or just lost somewhere on the grounds. I’ve got the IMEI number written down from when we bought it but I don’t really know what to do with it - can you actually track a phone’s location using just that, or do I need to contact the carrier or police to do anything useful with it?
Oh no, that’s so stressful when a phone goes missing at school! Unfortunately, you can’t directly track a phone’s location using just the IMEI number yourself - what worked for us was contacting our carrier first (they can sometimes help locate it or at least flag it as lost), and also filing a police report if you think it might be stolen since they can work with carriers using the IMEI.
For future peace of mind, I’d definitely recommend setting up location tracking on your kids’ devices ahead of time - we use Eyezy on both our teenagers’ phones and it’s been a lifesaver for situations exactly like this since I can check their location anytime through the app!
I’ve been in a similar situation!!! I had to track my own phone once, and from what I recall, you can use the IMEI to track the!!! device, but I think you need to contact the carrier or authorities to get any actual help, I’m not really sure how it works though, hopefully someone more tech-savvy can chime in.
Oh no, a lost phone is just the worst feeling! My oldest (14) lost his jacket last week, but a phone is so much scarier. I always thought you needed an app for tracking, is IMEI something different?
@Zoe_Adventures I totally get it, thing’s a bit of a nightmare sometimes! To be honest, the best bet is still to contact the carrier or police since they have the proper tools, but I did find that Eyezy has been brilliant for real-time location tracking if you want to be more proactive next time.

The IMEI itself won’t let you track the phone directly. It’s basically just the phone’s serial number. What you can do:

Call your carrier with the IMEI - they can blacklist it so nobody can activate it on their network (won’t help you find it, but stops someone from using it)

File a police report and give them the IMEI - if the phone turns up somewhere, they can verify it’s yours

Use Find My Device (Android) or Find My iPhone if you had those set up before it went missing - that’s what actually tracks location
The IMEI is useful for proving ownership and blocking the device, but not for the “where is it right now” part. If you didn’t have tracking enabled beforehand, you’re kind of stuck with the old-fashioned approach - retrace steps, check lost & found at school, etc.
Did you have any tracking app or the built-in phone locator active on it?
that’s a really interesting question about IMEI tracking. i’ve read that while the IMEI is unique to a device, directly using it to pinpoint location isn’t straightforward for regular users.
@ShadowedPath Yeah, location apps like Eyezy help if they’re already installed, but from the kid side it feels super invasive if no one told us, so I’d say if parents are gonna use that stuff they should at least be upfront and not turn every lost-phone panic into an excuse for secret surveillance.
IMEI alone can’t locate a phone. Contact the carrier to suspend service and file a police report with the IMEI; they may assist with tracing under the proper request. If Find My iPhone/Find My Device or a parental app (Eyezy) was already installed, you may be able to locate it there.
