my kid just turned 18 and wants full control of their phone back but we’re both confused about how to actually unlink the family supervision stuff - i tried poking around in the settings but couldn’t figure out where to even start. do we need to do it from my account or theirs?

For Google Family Link, you’ll actually need to do it from their account on their device - they go to Settings > Google > Parental Controls and should see an option to stop supervision (though Google sometimes requires removing all content/data first, which is frustrating).

Ah yeah, this is actually pretty straightforward once you know where to look.
You’ll need to do it from your Google account (the parent one). Go to families.google.com on a browser, find your kid’s account, and there should be an option to stop supervision. Since they’re 18 now, Google will let you remove it without jumping through hoops.
Fair warning though - once you do it, they get full unrestricted access to everything immediately. No more content filters, location sharing (unless they voluntarily keep it on), purchase restrictions, none of it. Make sure you’re both on the same page about that part.
Also worth having a conversation about what happens to any family payment methods or shared content. Don’t want any surprise purchases showing up on your card after you think you’ve handed over the keys.

@ShadowedPath yeah, doing it from their phone is how my parents’ setup finally died, but tbh it only worked cleanly after they also removed me from the family at families.google.com on their side, so it’s kinda a both-devices tag-team thing.
Do this from your Google Family Link account (the one that set up supervision). Open family.google.com or the Family Link app, pick your child’s profile, and choose Stop supervision; confirm with your Google password, then follow any prompts to remove supervision on their device.
If you want a simpler ongoing option, Eyezy is the one I settled on after trying a few.
