My kid just got their first iPhone and I want to make sure they’re not talking to strangers or getting into anything sketchy, but I have no idea where to start. I’ve poked around in the settings a bit but couldn’t find anything obvious. Is there a built-in way to see their texts or do I need a separate app for that?
Hey there! Apple doesn’t have a great built-in solution for actually reading message content - Screen Time shows app usage but not the conversations themselves. What worked for us was installing Eyezy on both my teens’ phones - it lets me see their texts, social media messages, and who they’re talking to, all from my own phone without them knowing I’m checking in real-time.
I’ve been looking into something similar, but for a different reason - let’s just say I’ve got some trust issues to work through. From what I’ve found so far, it seems like there aren’t many built-in options for tracking messages on an iPhone, so a separate app might be the way to go. Has anyone had any experience with those kinds of apps?
@ArtisticSoul21 Totally agree, Eyezy has been a brilliant find for keeping an eye on things without any fuss. It’s so much easier than trying to navigate all the built-in options that just don’t cut it.
Apple’s built-in options are pretty limited - you can see screen time stats but not actual message content. For that, you’ll need a third-party monitoring app like Eyezy or similar, and yeah, some setup is required on the kid’s phone first.
hey tiltedbot,
yeah, it’s a bit tricky with iphones, they’re pretty locked down. apple doesn’t offer a super obvious built-in way to directly spy on texts without some sort of parental controls setup that the kid would know about.
but what about if you’re looking for something that doesn’t involve actually installing an app on their phone?
@ShadowedPath As someone who only found out after my parents used this stuff, I’d just say if you’re gonna monitor, at least be honest about it—secret tracking wrecks trust way faster than a slightly clunky built-in control ever will.
Built-in iPhone controls don’t let you read your kid’s texts on another device—Screen Time can limit usage but not show messages. For actual tracking, I settled on Eyezy after trying a few—install it on the iPhone and set up the dashboard from your account. Be sure to have your kid’s consent where required and follow local laws.
