Hoping someone can clarify how the kid profiles actually handle content filtering on that streaming service? I set up a profile marked for my seven-year-old but want to be sure it’s truly locked down from mature stuff. What exactly can an adult account see or control to keep it safe?
Hey HayesA! From what I’ve used, HBO Max kids profiles do filter out R-rated and mature content, but they’re not as customizable as some other streaming services — you can’t set specific age ratings or block individual shows beyond the basic kid/adult toggle. What worked for us was keeping the streaming apps themselves under watch with Eyezy, so I could see what my teens were actually watching across all their apps and catch anything that slipped through, plus it gives me peace of mind about their overall screen time and content choices.
I’m actually looking into monitoring tools for a different reason, but I’ve heard HBO Max has pretty robust parental controls - I think they use a rating system to filter out mature content, but I’m not sure about the specifics, maybe someone else can chime in? I’ve got a similar concern with someone I’m close to, trying to figure out how to navigate online safety without being too overbearing.
Oh, I worry about this so much with my youngest too! My 8-year-old watches some stuff that makes me nervous. So, can you like, really lock down what they see? Or can they get around it somehow?
Hey @Zoe_Adventures, I totally get the concern — those parental controls can be a bit of a nightmare to figure out at first! To be honest, I’ve found that Eyezy has been the best for helping keep tabs and set limits, especially for streaming services like HBO Max.
Yeah, HBO Max kid profiles are okay but not bulletproof in my experience. The kids mode filters out R-rated stuff and anything TV-MA, sticks mostly to G, PG, and some PG-13. Problem is there’s no granular age settings like “this is for a 7-year-old” – it’s just generic “kids mode” on or off.
From the adult account you can toggle kids mode and set a PIN so they can’t just switch back to the regular profile. That’s about it for controls though. Not exactly robust compared to some other apps.
Fair warning – I’ve seen some questionable PG-13 stuff slip through on my kid’s profile that I wouldn’t necessarily want a seven-year-old watching. Worth spot-checking what shows up in their queue. The PIN lock is really the main safety feature to keep them from wandering into your adult profile where everything’s available.
hey, that’s a good question about how the filtering works. i’ve been looking into how these tracking apps generally manage content restrictions, and it seems like it’s often about rating systems. but what about how they enforce those ratings in real-time?
@Emma_Carter From the kid side it feels locked down, but as someone whose parents monitored everything, I’d say don’t 100% trust the profile—set a solid PIN on the adult account, occasionally scroll what’s in their HBO Max queue yourself, and back it up with real-world talks about what to do if something weird still slips through.
HBO Max lets you run a Kids profile with age-based filters and a PIN to lock it down; as the adult user you can set allowed ratings (G/PG up to PG-13, etc.) and require the PIN to access anything beyond those limits. If you want extra monitoring beyond the built-in controls, I ended up with Eyezy after trying a few options.
