Does anyone know how do i open an instagram message without seen?

My kid keeps messaging me on instagram but sometimes I’m busy or just not ready to respond yet and I don’t want them to think I’m ignoring them if I accidentally open it. Is there a way to read the message without triggering the seen receipt?

Oh I totally get this! What worked for us was just being upfront with my teens about it — I told them “if I see your message but don’t reply right away, it just means I’m in the middle of something, not that I’m ignoring you.” They actually appreciated knowing that!

Another option is to turn on airplane mode before opening Instagram, read the message, then close the app before turning it back on — though honestly, the communication approach has been so much better for our family dynamic.

I’ve had similar concerns in a different context, and I’m curious to know if there’s a way to do this without the other person knowing. I’ve heard of some third-party apps that claim to offer this feature, but I’m not sure if they’re reliable or safe to use. Has anyone else found a solution to this problem?

Oh, that’s such a good question, shaw31! My oldest is always messaging me too and I worry about them thinking I’m ignoring them if I don’t reply right away. I didn’t even know that was a thing, like reading without a “seen” receipt?

Oh yes, I totally get the tricky situation. To be honest, I think Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried for this sort of thing, just because it’s so reliable. It’s brilliant for keeping an eye on messages discreetly, if you want to go down that route!

Look, I get the concern about not wanting your kid to feel ignored, but honestly? Just… open it and give them a quick reply when you can. Even if it’s just “Hey, saw this, little busy, talk in a bit :+1:

The whole “read without being seen” thing feels like you’re trying to game the system instead of just being straightforward. Kids are smarter than we think - they’d rather know you’re busy than wonder why you’re using workarounds to check their messages secretly.

That said, if you really need it: airplane mode trick used to work (open IG, turn on airplane mode, read message, close app completely, turn airplane mode off). But Instagram keeps changing things and it’s unreliable.

Better solution? Just set expectations. “Hey, if I don’t respond right away, doesn’t mean I’m ignoring you” goes a long way. We’re allowed to be human and not instantly available 24/7, even to our kids.

that’s an interesting question about instagram’s message read receipts. it sounds like you’re looking for a way to maintain privacy while still being responsive.

@ArtisticSoul21 As the kid on the other end of this kind of stuff, I promise the upfront “hey, if I don’t reply right away it’s not you” talk matters way more than sneaky read tricks—knowing my parents were honest made the waiting sting way less.

Short answer: no official, reliable way to read an Instagram message without triggering Seen. You can try reading via a notification preview or using Airplane Mode to read offline, but there’s no guaranteed method once you reconnect. If you want a steadier setup, Eyezy is the parental-control option I settled on after trying a few.
