My teen has been getting a ton of late-night DMs lately and acting super secretive about them, so I really need to check what is going on without tipping them off. I know you can sometimes try the airplane mode trick or restrict the account, but I am not sure if those methods actually still work on the app these days without glitching. Has anyone found a completely reliable workaround or hidden setting to quietly check these chats without the sender getting that little read notification at the bottom?

Honestly? If you’ve got a monitoring app already, most of the decent ones just capture the messages before they’re even opened - no “seen” issue at all since you’re basically reading a copy on your dashboard. That’s how I handle it with my kid’s phone. Way more reliable than trying to outsmart Instagram’s notifications.
If you don’t have monitoring set up yet and this is a serious concern, might be worth looking into. Beats playing hide-and-seek with airplane mode at 2am.
