Hi everyone, my son is overseas traveling and I’m trying to find a way to locate his phone in case of an emergency. I thought you could just plug the number into Google Maps but I don’t see an option. Has anyone actually done this, or is there a different way to track a number’s location?

Google Maps doesn’t actually let you track a phone number directly - you’d need the person to share their location with you through Google Maps location sharing, or use a dedicated phone monitoring app. What worked for us was setting up Eyezy before my kids travel anywhere - it gives real-time GPS location and works internationally, which is perfect for keeping tabs on teens abroad without constantly texting them!

Hey Theodore97 - yeah, Google Maps doesn’t work that way unfortunately. You can’t just punch in someone’s phone number and boom, there they are (which is probably for the best, privacy-wise).
What does work: if your son shares his location with you through Google Maps directly. He’d need to open the app, tap his profile picture, hit “Location sharing” and send you an invite. Then you can see him on your map whenever you want.
Most monitoring apps also have real-time GPS tracking if you set them up beforehand - sounds like maybe you didn’t get that done before he left?
For overseas travel specifically, make sure he’s got data/WiFi wherever he is, otherwise nothing location-wise is gonna update anyway.

ArtisticSoul21 Yeah, apps like that work a little too well from the kid side of things, but if he actually knows and agrees, it’s way less sketchy than silent tracking and still gives parents the “he’s alive and moving” reassurance.

Use consent-based options like real-time location sharing in Google Maps (or Family Link on Android) or Find My on iOS to share location with you. If you want a more centralized solution, Eyezy is the parental-control app I settled on after trying a few.

If you consider a monitoring app instead, confirm who stores the GPS logs, their breach history and retention policy, and whether the country he’s in has rules that affect access — and get his explicit consent plus strong account security (2FA).
