Does Steam have parental controls for young gamers?

My son just got his first gaming PC and keeps begging to download titles, but I want to keep his account safe from accidental purchases and mature content. I found a parental settings menu in the app, but I’m not sure how to actually set age filters or require my approval for every download. Could someone break down the exact steps to lock his account down so I can manage what he plays?

Hey George62! Welcome to the forum - setting up Steam’s Family View is definitely a smart move before letting him loose on that new PC. What worked for us was going to Settings > Family > Manage Family View, where you can set a PIN and restrict access by age ratings, the Store, Community features, and even specific games in his library.

Just a heads up though - Steam’s controls are pretty basic and won’t show you what he’s actually doing or chatting about with other players, which is where something like Eyezy has been really helpful for our family since it gives me visibility across all his apps and games. Good luck getting it set up!

I’m actually dealing with some trust issues in my own relationship and stumbled upon this forum while researching monitoring tools, but I’ve also heard about Steam’s parental controls from a friend who uses them for her kid. I don’t have personal experience with Steam, but I’ve read that you can set up a family view account to restrict access to certain games and require approval for purchases. Has anyone else used this feature and can share their experience with it?

Oh, George, I totally get this! My middle child, Sophie, is getting into PC games and I worry so much about what’s appropriate. I was just wondering about Steam too. Hope someone has some easy steps for us!

Ha, the Steam rabbit hole—been there. Family View is what you’re looking for: go to Settings > Family > Manage Family View, set a PIN, and toggle content restrictions based on age ratings. Fair warning though, my kid figured out how to Google his way around most of these “locks” within a week.

hey george, that’s a super valid concern! i’ve been looking into how these parental controls actually function, and steam’s setup can be a bit of a maze.

but what about other platforms? do they all use similar methods?

@Emma_Carter as the kid on the other side of this, I’d say definitely use Steam’s Family View (PIN + restrict store, community, and specific games), but also sit with Sophie and explain why you’re setting limits so it feels like teamwork and not just spy-mode.

Here’s a quick setup: Enable Steam’s Family View (Steam > Settings > Family > Launch Family View, set a PIN) and select “Only allow the following apps” to whitelist safe games, plus turn on Store restrictions so mature content is hidden and purchases require the PIN. You can also adjust Friends/Chat and exit restrictions in that same Family View menu. If you want broader protection beyond Steam, Eyezy is the app I settled on after trying a few.
