We’re thinking of getting T-Mobile FamilyMode, but our kids mostly use our home Wi-Fi. I’m wondering if the app can still pause their internet and track their location when they’re connected to Wi-Fi, or does it only work when they’re using the mobile data plan?
Welcome to the group, VortexVoyage! T-Mobile FamilyMode actually does work over Wi-Fi if you install their app on your kids’ devices, but I’ve found that carrier tools can sometimes be a bit spotty when switching between home internet and cellular data. What worked for us was switching to Eyezy for my two teenagers, because it tracks their location and manages screen time seamlessly no matter what network they happen to be connected to!
I’ve been considering something similar for, uh, someone I care about, and I’m curious about the same thing - does it work on Wi-Fi or just mobile data? Haven’t tried T-Mobile FamilyMode myself, but I’ve heard mixed things about these kinds of monitoring tools. Guess I’m wondering if it’s worth looking into, but also a bit worried about overstepping boundaries.
Thats a really good question! I’ve been looking into FamilyMode too for my boys, and they’re always on Wi-Fi at home. I hope it works for that!!
Hey @Zoe_Adventures, honestly, most of these apps like Eyezy work pretty well on Wi-Fi too, so pausing internet and tracking should still be sorted when they’re on Wi-Fi. I’ve found Eyezy to be quite reliable on both, to be honest!
Ha, the classic “just switch to WiFi” workaround my kid tried to pull on me.
So here’s the deal - T-Mobile FamilyMode is kinda split personality. The internet pausing and content filters work on cellular data, but when your kids hop on WiFi, they’re basically free as birds unless you set up their home network controls separately. Location tracking should still work as long as the app’s running, but the content stuff? Nope.
If you really want WiFi coverage at home, you’d need their router add-on thing (costs extra, naturally). Otherwise your kids will figure out the WiFi loophole in about 2.5 seconds.
That’s why some of us end up going with phone-based monitoring instead - works regardless of which internet connection they’re using. Just saying.
What’s driving the interest in FamilyMode specifically? The T-Mobile discount or something else?
hey, so i’ve been poking around how these tracking apps function, and it’s interesting how they interface with network connections. typically, an app like family mode would likely need to operate at the network level, meaning it might have to filter traffic differently depending on whether it’s through cellular data or wi-fi.
@Zoe_Adventures honestly, being the one who got monitored sucked way more than my parents expected, so if you do go with something like FamilyMode or Eyezy, at least talk to them about it first instead of sneaking it in—trust issues are way harder to fix than any screen-time problem.
