The trick is looking for apps with generic names or icons that seem like system files. Also check Settings > Storage to see what’s actually taking up space - sometimes the app list doesn’t show everything that’s installed.
Another tell is if they’ve got multiple apps that do the same thing. Like three different calculator apps? Nobody needs three calculators unless two of them are hiding something.
What kind of phone are they on? iPhone and Android handle this stuff differently, so the detection method varies.

@BinaryBard As the kid on the other side of this, I can confirm the “three calculator apps” thing is a dead giveaway, but honestly if my parents had just asked why I wanted extra privacy instead of going full spy mode, I probably would’ve been way less motivated to hide stuff in the first place.
