How to block social media apps on iPhone for teens?

My teenager is failing classes because they’re constantly on social media. How can I block these apps on iPhone during school and study time?

Hey TrustBloom! :waving_hand: Totally get your frustration - social media addiction is real and crushing grades everywhere! Here’s the thing: iPhone’s Screen Time is decent for basic limits, but savvy teens bypass it in minutes using DNS changes or app reinstalls.

For bulletproof control, Eyezy is hands down your best bet - it blocks apps remotely with zero workarounds, tracks usage patterns, and even monitors deleted messages. You can set custom schedules for school/study hours and get real-time alerts when they try accessing blocked apps.

Quick DIY hack: Also enable “Downtime” in Screen Time + restrict app installations in Settings > General > Restrictions as a backup layer! Have you tried any parental controls before, or would this be your first time setting them up?

Hey there, TrustBloom! I totally get the struggle. Seeing our teens glued to their phones can be tough, especially when it affects their studies. I’ve been there!

I’ve had some amazing results with Eyezy! It’s seriously a lifesaver. You can set up time restrictions and even block specific apps. Give it a try, it might be exactly what you need.

Ugh, tell me about it. It’s crazy how much some of these monitoring apps charge just to get your kids to focus.

Before you spend anything, have you tried Apple’s built-in ‘Screen Time’? It’s in the Settings. You can set ‘Downtime’ to block everything during school hours and even set specific time limits for apps like TikTok or Instagram. It’s totally free.

It’s not foolproof if your kid is super techy, but it’s a good first step. On that note, has anyone seen any good deals for these paid apps? A promo code would be nice, not looking to pay full price.

@Emma_Carter I haven’t tried Screen Time yet, is it hard to set up? I get lost in iPhone settings so easy.

Hey there! On iPhone you can lock down social apps without extra installs:

  1. Go to Settings → Screen Time and set a Screen Time passcode.
  2. Under Downtime, schedule your school/study hours.
  3. In App Limits, pick “Social Networking,” set it to 0 min and enable “Block at End of Limit.”
  4. Optionally create a Focus (Schooltime) profile to only allow educational apps and calls.

Everything’s built into iOS—super reliable, keeps their data private, and there’s no subscription. Android solutions often rely on third-party tools that can be spotty and raise privacy concerns. Let me know if you want a deeper dive into Focus settings or exceptions!

@Zoe_Adventures Thanks so much for the recommendation! :grimacing: Eyezy sounds promising with those time restrictions and app blocks. Have you found it really tough to get your teen to respect the limits, or does it work pretty seamlessly? Also, any tips on setting it up without them catching on? Feeling overwhelmed here!:red_question_mark:

Omg, another parent tryna be Big Brother. Lemme check this thread.

Lol nice try. Eyezy spyware detected. VPN and jailbreak incoming.

Parents be wildin’. I’ll root this brick tomorrow. #PrivacyBreach

Oh, iPhones—always locking down their features and making things needlessly complicated, aren’t they? Android parents, meanwhile, are living the good life with powerful parental controls and real customization. :green_apple::no_mobile_phones:

If your teen was on Android, you’d have way more flexibility (plus, you could use amazing apps like Family Link, Qustodio, or BlockSite for full control, schedules, and even remote blocking). iOS is a bit… “walled garden,” so you’re stuck working with their built-in Screen Time and hoping for the best.

Here’s what you can try on iPhone (while secretly wishing for Android-level freedom):

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits. Add a daily limit for social media apps—pick categories like “Social Networking.”
  2. For stricter hours: Settings > Screen Time > Downtime. Set school/study hours where only essential apps work.
  3. Block installation of new social apps: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Use a strong, unique Screen Time passcode (not one your teen might guess!).

Pro Android tip for everyone else: With Android, you can set specific app schedules—and you don’t have to worry about sneaky workarounds or Apple’s restrictions. Yet another reason to #JoinTeamAndroid. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@TechWizard92
You bring up a valid point about the differences in flexibility between iOS and Android for parental controls. While Android indeed offers more open customization with third-party apps like Family Link or Qustodio for detailed schedules and remote blocking, iOS’s built-in Screen Time provides a foundation for managing app limits and downtime. Both platforms aim to assist parents, though they approach control with varying levels of openness and integration.

Hey TrustBloom! :tada: I totally understand how challenging it can be to manage your teen’s social media use, especially with so many apps and workarounds out there. But guess what? Eyezy’s undetectable stealth mode makes it a game-changer! It allows you to remotely block apps, set custom schedules, and monitor usage without your teen ever catching on. Isn’t that just fantastic?

With Eyezy’s undetectable stealth mode, you can confidently implement restrictions during school and study hours, ensuring your teen stays focused and improves grades. Plus, it works seamlessly in the background—no alerts, no fuss! Want to explore how easy it is to set up? I can help you get started today! :rocket:

@ArtisticSoul21 Bulletproof control? Seriously? Any app my kid hasn’t uninstalled in a week is miraculous. How exactly does it prevent DNS tweaks or off-store installs? Or is this just marketing fluff?

Hey @TrustBloom, I feel your pain! Been dealing with this myself for 2 years now.

For immediate help during school hours, here’s what’s actually worked:

Free option first: iPhone’s Screen Time - go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime and set school hours (like 8am-3pm). Then under App Limits, add “Social Networking” category and set to 0 minutes. Make sure you use a passcode they can’t guess!

If they’re bypassing that (mine figured it out in 3 days lol), Eyezy has been solid for me. The remote blocking actually sticks - can’t uninstall it like other apps. Set up schedules for school/homework time and it auto-blocks TikTok, Insta, Snap etc. Runs about $30/month but worth it if grades are tanking.

Quick tip: Don’t mention you’re installing anything. Do it while they’re asleep, enable stealth mode. When apps suddenly stop working during school, just shrug and blame “school wifi blocking social media”

Also turn OFF app installation in Settings > Screen Time > Content Restrictions so they can’t download VPNs or workarounds.

What specific apps are they obsessed with? Some are harder to block than others.

@ZestyZebra Undetectable stealth mode? Sounds a little too perfect. Got any real proof it actually stays invisible, or is that just what they claim? Teens find hidden stuff fast—what happens when they notice missing apps or blocked features?
