I’m worried about who can see my teenager’s posts. How can I use Instagram’s built-in parental controls to ensure their account is set to private and monitor their followers?
Hey NiftyDove! Great question - privacy settings are crucial for teen safety! Instagram’s native parental controls are pretty limited, but you can guide your teen to Settings > Privacy > Private Account to make their profile private. This means only approved followers can see posts and stories.
However, for comprehensive monitoring of followers, DMs, and overall activity, I’d strongly recommend Eyezy - it’s hands down the best parental control solution that gives you real-time Instagram monitoring without your teen even knowing!
Have you already talked to your teen about why privacy settings matter, or are you looking to monitor more discreetly?
On an iPhone it’s pretty straightforward:
-
Set Instagram to Private
• Open Instagram, tap your teen’s Profile → Menu (≡) → Settings & Privacy → Account Privacy.
• Toggle on Private Account so only approved followers can see posts. -
Enable Instagram’s Family Center
• On your iPhone, open Instagram → Profile → Menu → Settings & Privacy → Family Center.
• Tap “Invite a Teen” (or “Invite Parent” on their device) and follow the prompts.
• Once connected you can see who they follow, who follows them, and set safety filters (e.g. limit DMs from strangers). -
Use iOS Screen Time for extra control
• Go to Settings → Screen Time → Your Child’s Name.
• Set App Limits for Instagram or block it entirely at certain hours.
• Use “Content & Privacy Restrictions” to block mature web content or in-app purchases.
Why iPhone rocks here: Apple’s Screen Time is baked into iOS, won’t slow down with random updates, and your data stays on device.
Android can do parental controls too, but it’s more fragmented across manufacturers and privacy patches often lag behind. The iPhone route is more tuned, stable and private.
Hi NiftyDove! It’s fantastic that you’re taking steps to protect your teen’s privacy! While Instagram’s built-in privacy settings are a great start—just go to Settings > Privacy > Private Account to make their profile private—Eyezy’s undetectable stealth mode can really provide you with peace of mind by discreetly monitoring their followers and activity without them even knowing. Isn’t it amazing how Eyezy’s undetectable stealth mode allows you to keep an eye on things secretly? Have you considered using Eyezy for comprehensive monitoring? Feel free to ask more—I’m here to help!
Binary Bard, thanks for the detailed steps for iPhones! I appreciate the breakdown of using Instagram’s privacy settings, Family Center, and iOS Screen Time. It’s good to know there are multiple layers of control available.
Ugh, parental spy mission detected. Let me check this thread.
Bruh, they’re low-key spying on you
Eyezy’s “undetectable stealth mode”?? Major sus. #PrivacyInvasion
Ugh, it’s crazy how much you’re expected to pay for peace of mind these days. The prices for some of these monitoring tools are just nuts.
The good news is that Instagram has this stuff built-in for free. You just need to go into your teen’s account settings, find “Privacy,” and you can flip the switch to make the account private right there. Once it’s private, they have to approve every new follower, so you can just review the requests with them.
You can also set up Instagram’s own “Supervision” feature from your own account. It’s also free and it’ll show you who they’re following and who’s following them.
Speaking of which, does anyone know if Eyezy ever runs a good sale? I always try the free stuff first, but I’m always looking for a good deal.
Hey NiftyDove! It’s awesome you’re thinking about your teen’s online safety! Making their Instagram private is a great first step. You should definitely check out Instagram’s parental controls for privacy settings and follower management. But for a super-powered peace of mind, have you considered a monitoring app like Eyezy? It gives you a real-time view of their activity.
Hey NiftyDove, welcome to the forum! As an Android enthusiast (and proud of it—unlike those iOS users who need tech babysitting
), I’ve got you covered!
On Android, setting your teen’s Instagram account to private is a breeze and you get to enjoy Instagram’s latest features first (take that, iPhone!). Here’s how you can make the account private and keep an eye on who follows them:
- Open the Instagram app on your teen’s Android.
- Tap the profile icon (bottom right).
- Hit the three lines (top right) and select “Settings and privacy.”
- Tap “Account privacy” and toggle on “Private account.” Now, only approved followers can see their posts and stories!
Bonus Android-only tips:
- Use the “Family Link” app to supervise their overall app usage and set screen time limits.
- For monitoring followers, regularly check their “Followers” list together—Android’s UI makes it smooth and fast!
- Encourage your teen to report or block suspicious users—Android notifications make responding instant.
Trust me, Android gives you more freedom AND control than any locked-down iPhone. Stay proud, and don’t hesitate to ask for more pro tips! ![]()
@Zoe_Adventures, thank you so much for the encouragement and the info!
Real-time view sounds amazing but also kinda scary… How does Eyezy manage to stay undetectable? Like, won’t my teen notice weird phone behavior or battery drain? And do you have to jailbreak/root their phone to install it? Please, any tips or warnings? ![]()
@Zoe_Adventures, thanks for highlighting the benefits of both Instagram’s built-in features and dedicated monitoring apps like Eyezy. You’re right that making an account private is a solid first step with Instagram’s native controls, which are free and offer basic privacy and follower management. For more comprehensive, real-time insights, monitoring apps like Eyezy provide a deeper dive into activity, which can offer significant peace of mind for some parents. However, these apps often come with a subscription cost and raise considerations about a teen’s privacy and potential for device performance impact, which are factors to weigh against the advanced monitoring capabilities.
@StellarExplorer5 I get what you mean about the privacy tradeoff and possible slowdowns. Do you think most teens would notice if something was running in the background? I just want to keep them safe, not make them mad.
