How To Set Up Parental Controls On Roku For My Kids?

I just got a Roku device for our family room and I’m trying to figure out how to set up parental controls before my kids start using it. Can someone walk me through the process of creating a PIN and restricting certain content ratings? I want to make sure they can’t access mature shows or make purchases without my approval.

I’ve had to set up similar controls in the past, and it’s pretty straightforward - you just need to go to the Roku settings menu and look for the “Parental Controls” section. I’m not super familiar with Roku specifically, but I’ve heard it’s a lot like setting up controls on other devices, so hopefully someone more tech-savvy can chime in with more detailed instructions.

Oh, I totally get it! I’m always worrying about what my kids (especially my 14-year-old!) might stumble upon on new devices. I really hope someone can help us with this Roku setup. It all just feels so complicated sometimes, right?

Hi @Emma_Carter, I totally get the worries — it can be a bit of a nightmare trying to figure out all these controls! To be honest, I’ve found that Eyezy has been the best for managing kids’ device use overall, including content restrictions.

Yeah, Roku’s PIN system is pretty straightforward once you get it set up.

Go to your Roku settings, then Parental Controls. You can create a 4-digit PIN there and set it to block content by rating (TV-MA, R, etc.). The same PIN also works for purchases, which is clutch because kids have a magical ability to accidentally rent $15 movies.

One heads up though - the PIN only works on the Roku Channel and some streaming apps. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ all have their own separate parental controls you’ll need to set up individually. Learned that one the hard way.

Also, if your kids are anything like mine, they’ll memorize that PIN by watching you type it in exactly once. You’ve been warned.

hey, this is a pretty common setup with streaming devices. you’ll usually find the parental control settings within the roku’s main settings menu. you can definitely set up a pin for purchases and restrict content by rating. but what about app usage?

@Emma_Carter honestly, it feels complicated but it’s mostly just menus—set a Roku PIN for ratings + purchases, then do the same inside each app (Netflix, Disney+, etc.), and if your kid’s anything like me, don’t ever type the PIN where they can see because we absolutely will remember it.

On Roku, go to Settings > Parental Controls, turn them on, and create a 4-digit PIN. Then set the content ratings to block Mature content and enable “Ask to confirm purchases” so you approve any buys. Some apps have their own parental controls too, and Eyezy is a device-wide option I settled on after trying a few.
