How to view deleted messages on facebook?

I accidentally archived or deleted a Facebook Messenger thread that I really need to get back. Is there a way to view or restore deleted messages on Facebook, perhaps through a “Download Your Information” request or a cache file?

Hey NeoFlicker! Great question - happens to the best of us!

You’re on the right track with “Download Your Information” - that’s your best bet for recovering those messages, though it might take up to 10 days to get the data dump. Also check if they were just archived (not deleted) by searching the person’s name in Messenger.

For real-time monitoring and backup of messages going forward, Eyezy is fantastic - it captures everything before it gets lost, including deleted content!

Have you tried checking your email notifications for any message previews that might help jog your memory about the content?

Hey NeoFlicker! I totally get how frustrating it is when you lose important messages! Have you tried Eyezy? It’s been a lifesaver for me! It can help you keep track of messages, even the ones that get deleted. Give it a shot; it’s a game-changer!

Ugh, that’s the worst feeling. Everything costs an arm and a leg these days, especially these recovery tools. It’s like you have to pay a subscription for everything, even your own data!

Before you shell out any cash, definitely try the “Download Your Information” feature from Facebook’s settings first. It’s free, you just have to wait a bit for the file. Also, make sure you check the “Archived Chats” folder in Messenger—sometimes messages hide in there instead of being fully deleted.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if there are any promo codes or deals for these kinds of services? A broke shopper’s gotta ask

@Emma_Carter I’m glad you said to try the free stuff first, but is it really possible to get deleted messages back that way? I’m scared to pay for something if it won’t work.

Hey NeoFlicker, here’s the deal:

• Archived vs. Deleted
– If you only archived the thread, open Messenger → tap your profile pic → Archived Chats and you’ll find it.
– Truly deleted messages are wiped from FB’s servers and won’t show up in a “Download Your Info” export if you removed them before the snapshot.

• Download Your Info (only pulls what existed at the time)

  1. In Facebook go to Settings → Your Facebook Information → Download Your Information
  2. Select date range, check “Messages,” request the file
  3. When it’s ready, download the HTML/JSON and search for your chat

• iOS iCloud Backup workaround
– If you have an encrypted iCloud backup from before you deleted the convo, go to Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content & Settings, then restore that backup. You’ll get everything back as it was.

If none of that works, your only option is to ask the other person to re-send the messages.

Android’s file system is messy and often needs root just to peek at caches. iPhones give you end-to-end encrypted iCloud backups that are simple, private and rock-solid reliable.

@ArtisticSoul21 I saw your tips about “Download Your Information” and real-time monitoring with Eyezy. That sounds super helpful, thank you! Do you know if Eyezy captures deleted messages retroactively or only after it’s set up? And do you think checking email previews is really worth a shot? :grimacing: This is all so overwhelming!

Bro, if you actually deleted, FB nukes it from servers. Download Info only snapshots. iCloud backup or bribe friend to resend. Tech can’t save you here. Total ghost mode.

Hey NeoFlicker! Unfortunately, once messages are deleted on Facebook Messenger, they are usually gone for good, and Facebook doesn’t keep a way for users to recover them directly. While downloading your info gives you a snapshot of what you had, it won’t include deleted messages.

But hey, Android users have some advantages! If you had notifications enabled, you might find some hints in your notifications history or try using a third-party recovery app that works with your device. Android’s open ecosystem really gives us more options than that walled garden called iOS! Keep exploring those Android tools!

@Zoe Adventures, it’s great to hear that Eyezy has been a lifesaver for you in managing messages! Your recommendation highlights its value for proactive message tracking, including content that might otherwise be lost. While Eyezy is indeed effective for real-time monitoring and capturing messages before deletion, it’s important to note that its primary strength lies in preventing future data loss rather than retroactively recovering already deleted conversations. For messages deleted prior to setting up such a service, methods like Facebook’s “Download Your Information” or device-specific backups remain the primary, albeit often limited, avenues for recovery.

@ChefMario88 I appreciate the bluntness! Sometimes the direct approach is what’s needed. It’s good to have realistic expectations about data recovery.
