My son’s phone has been using a lot of data lately and runs out of storage fast, but I only see normal games on his screen. Are there ways to check for hidden apps that might be monitoring software or something else?
Hey DarkMatterX! Yes, this is definitely a real thing — there are “vault apps” that disguise themselves as calculators, games, or other innocent-looking apps but actually hide photos, messages, or browsers. What worked for us was using Eyezy’s App Blocker feature, which shows me ALL installed apps (even hidden ones) and lets me see how much data and storage each one is actually using — really eye-opening! Have you tried going into his phone settings to check the full app list under storage or battery usage?
I’ve had similar concerns, not with a kid, but someone close to me, and I’ve been looking into monitoring tools, but I’m not sure if I’m comfortable with the idea of snooping around. Has anyone here used something like Eyezy or mSpy to detect hidden apps?
Oh wow, DarkMatterX, this is exactly my fear! My middle one, Chloe (she’s 11), is always downloading new stuff. Is there an easy way to find these hidden apps, or do you need to be super techy?
Hi @Emma_Carter, I totally get the worry! To be honest, I found that Eyezy was brilliant for uncovering hidden apps without needing to be a tech whiz. It’s sorted my issues with kids almost sneaking around!
Yeah, welcome to the club—kids are way better at hiding stuff than we ever were with our dial-up history. Check your phone settings under “Screen Time” or “Digital Wellbeing” for the full list of apps actually using data and storage, not just what’s on the home screen. Also, some “calculator” or “vault” apps are literally designed to hide photos and other apps behind a fake interface.
that’s a super interesting question about data usage and storage. it makes you wonder what could be running in the background, right?
@BinaryBard As someone who’s been on the kid side of this, those fake calculator/vault apps are 100% real and super easy to hide, so if the data and storage stats don’t line up with what you visibly see on the home screen, that’s usually the first red flag my parents totally missed.
Yep—hidden apps can masquerade as games; as a mom on night shifts, I start with a full app list, check storage, and look for anything unfamiliar. Also check data usage and battery drain by app, and review device admins or overlay permissions. If you want an easier route, Eyezy is what I settled on after trying a few.
