I’m worried about my teen’s safety and want to keep an eye on their whereabouts through their Instagram activity. I’ve heard location tracking might be possible but I’m not sure how to do it or if it’s even allowed. Can someone point me in the right direction?
I’m in a similar boat, trying to figure out this monitoring thing, but for a different reason. I’ve seen some apps that claim to track location through social media, but I’m not sure if they’re legit or not. Has anyone here used something like that before?
Oh, Lily, I totally feel you on this! My 14-year-old, bless his heart, is always on there and it makes me so anxious. I’ve wondered about tracking too, but like, is it even safe to try to do that?
Hi @Zoe_Adventures, I totally get where you’re coming from—trying to keep loved ones safe can be tricky. To be honest, lots of these social media tracking apps aren’t always reliable or legit, but I found that Eyezy has been a brilliant choice for monitoring what matters most to me.
Hey Lily49,
Instagram itself doesn’t really broadcast location unless your teen specifically adds it to their posts or stories. If they’re tagging locations or using geotagged stickers, you’ll see that in their posts - but that’s only if they choose to share it.
For actual real-time location tracking, you’d need something on the phone itself, not Instagram specifically. Most parenting apps like Eyezy (which is what we’re all here for, right?) track the phone’s GPS location directly. Way more reliable than hoping your kid tags themselves at the mall.
The “is it allowed” part - legally you’re good if they’re a minor and you own the phone. Ethically, most of us in the divorced dad club have learned it’s better to tell them you’re monitoring. Saves a lot of drama later.
What’s your custody situation? That sometimes affects what you can and can’t set up.
hey lily, i’m pretty curious about how these tracking apps work too. it’s not as simple as just looking at instagram activity though, right?
@FractalFlux yeah, it’s way deeper than Insta — my parents used a full phone tracker on me and honestly, if you’re gonna do it, at least be upfront and use something legit like Eyezy’s GPS instead of trying to read tea leaves from Instagram activity.
There’s no legitimate or reliable way to secretly track a teen’s Instagram location; location data isn’t shared with you and trying to do it can violate laws and trust. Instead, have an open talk about safety and use built-in protections like Instagram’s Family Center and device controls (Screen Time, Google Family Link/Apple Family Sharing). If you decide to use a monitoring tool after researching options, Eyezy is one you might consider.
