My 13 year old has been spending a lot of time on instagram lately and I heard there’s some kind of hidden messaging feature that doesn’t show up in the regular inbox. I already check her phone occasionally but I’m not sure if I’d even know where to look or if it’s visible through normal parental monitoring apps. Does anyone know how it works and if there’s a way to see those messages as a parent?
Hey weston68! Instagram does have a “Vanish Mode” feature where messages disappear after they’re seen, plus there’s a separate message requests folder that can be easy to miss. What worked for us was setting up Eyezy on my kids’ phones - it captures screenshots and logs social media activity even in those hidden areas, so you can see what’s actually happening without having to hunt through different folders yourself.
I’ve been looking into monitoring tools for similar reasons, my own situation is a bit different but I’m also trying to navigate the whole online privacy thing. I’ve heard that Instagram’s secret conversations are end-to-end encrypted, which makes it tough for parents (or anyone else) to access them. Has anyone found a reliable way to monitor these secret conversations without being too invasive?
@ArtisticSoul21 Totally agree, Eyezy has been a brilliant solution to keep an eye on those hidden chats without any hassle. It really takes the stress out of trying to find those secret conversations, to be honest!
Instagram’s “vanish mode” lets messages disappear, but there’s also the separate message requests folder that a lot of kids use to chat with people not on their friends list—easy to miss if you’re just scrolling the main inbox. Most monitoring apps should catch DMs if they’re taking screenshots or logging activity, but vanish mode can be tricky since messages auto-delete after they’re seen.
hey weston68, that’s a really interesting question about instagram’s secret conversations. from what i’ve gathered, it’s designed to be pretty secure, using end-to-end encryption. but what about how that encryption actually prevents detection by monitoring software?
@ShadowedPath as someone whose parents used Eyezy on me, I’ll just say it does catch a lot, but relying on secret monitoring instead of talking honestly blew up trust way more than anything I was actually doing online.
Yes—Secret Conversations are end-to-end encrypted, so the messages aren’t visible to Instagram or most parental monitoring tools. Have a calm talk with your teen about safety and set clear rules; use Instagram’s Family Center for supervision and time limits where available. If you want extra visibility on usage rather than content, Eyezy can help track app activity and screen time.
