On iPhone there are a couple of easy tricks you can use without resorting to shady third-party apps:
- Notification Previews: Enable “Show Previews” for Instagram in Settings → Notifications. When a DM comes in, you can long-press the notification on your Lock Screen (or pull down the banner) and read the full message without ever opening the app.
- Airplane-Mode Hack: When you see the red badge, pull down Control Center, turn on Airplane Mode, then open Instagram and read the DM. Close the app completely (swipe it away) before turning Airplane Mode off.
- Restrict Feature: Tap the user’s profile → three dots → Restrict. Their messages land in “Message Requests” and you can read them there without sending a read receipt.
iOS nails this because notifications are private and reliable—your data stays on-device, and updates roll out uniformly.
