I’m trying to keep an eye on my kid’s iPhone texts without constantly taking the phone, mainly for safety and bullying concerns. I’ve looked at Screen Time but it doesn’t really show message content-what options actually work and are reliable?

Screen Time is pretty useless for actual message content, you’re right. It’s more of a “look, I’m doing something” feature.
For iPhones, your realistic options are pretty limited because Apple locks things down hard. Eyezy works if you can get access to their iCloud credentials - you don’t need to jailbreak which is nice. mSpy is the other one people mention a lot. Both do the iCloud route for iOS.
Fair warning though: the iCloud method means you’re not getting real-time updates. There’s usually a delay, sometimes significant. Also requires their iCloud backup to be turned on, which some kids figure out how to disable once they get suspicious.
How old’s your kid? That might affect what’s realistic here. My 15-year-old would spot monitoring software from a mile away at this point.
