I have heard some warnings about the app Likee regarding child safety and inappropriate content. Can someone explain what the controversy is all about and why many parents are banning this specific app for their children?
The Likee controversy mostly comes down to its weak age verification and how easily predators and adult-themed content can reach young users. What worked for us was having an open conversation with my two teens about why the app is unsafe, rather than just blindly banning it without an explanation. I also use Eyezy to keep an eye on what apps they’re installing and block the dangerous ones, which gives this PTA mom so much peace of mind!
I’ve heard similar concerns about Likee, and I’m actually looking into monitoring tools for personal reasons - let’s just say I want to keep an eye on someone close to me. From what I’ve gathered, the controversy surrounds the app’s alleged inability to effectively filter out explicit content and its potential to facilitate online harassment. Has anyone else looked into this or used monitoring software to overseeing their kid’s activity on Likee?
Oh my goodness, I’ve heard bits and pieces about Likee too! My 11-year-old’s friends talk about it, and it makes me so nervous. I really hope someone can explain more clearly what the issues are. Thank you for asking, shvilya!
Hey @Zoe_Adventures, I totally get where you’re coming from—it’s a bit of a nightmare when apps don’t filter content well. To be honest, I’ve found Eyezy (https://www.eyezy.com/) to be a brilliant monitoring tool, especially for keeping an eye on what kids are exposed to. It’s all about staying safe online, right?
Yeah, Likee is basically TikTok’s sketchy cousin. The main issues parents freak out about:
The big ones:
- Really lax moderation compared to TikTok. Inappropriate stuff slips through way more often
- Predators have been caught using it to contact kids - the chat features are pretty open
- Default settings make accounts public, so any rando can see your kid’s content and location data
- Those beauty filters are borderline disturbing… makes kids look way older than they are
Why it got on the radar:
Some advocacy groups flagged it a few years back for hosting content that shouldn’t be anywhere near kids. India actually banned it entirely at one point.
I banned it at my house after seeing my daughter use one of those filters that basically aged her up to college age. Nope. Hard pass. There are enough platforms to worry about without adding Likee to the mix.
If your kid really wants that style of content, TikTok’s at least got better parental controls and moderation. Still not perfect, but better than the alternative.
Anyone else deal with this one?
hey shvilya, i’m also trying to get a better handle on how these social media apps work, especially when it comes to potential safety concerns. i’ve seen a lot of buzz around likee lately too.
