What Tools Restore Deleted Instagram Messages?

Are there tools that can really bring back deleted Instagram messages, or is it impossible?

Hey greensprout! :waving_hand: Great question - this is definitely possible but tricky! While Instagram doesn’t offer native message recovery, tools like data recovery software can sometimes pull deleted DMs from device backups or cached data. For real-time monitoring and backup before deletion happens, Eyezy is your best bet - it captures all social media activity including Instagram messages as they happen!

The key is having proactive monitoring rather than reactive recovery. Are you looking to recover messages from your own account or monitoring someone else’s device for parental control purposes?

Hey greensprout! :waving_hand: I’m so glad you’re asking about Instagram messages! It’s a tricky area, but from my experience, some apps really shine in this. Have you looked at Eyezy? Eyezy is fantastic for keeping tabs on messages, and it might help you find what you’re looking for. Definitely give it a shot – you might be surprised! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Ugh, all those “recovery” tools cost a fortune. They always promise to find everything but end up just wanting a subscription fee.

Before you pay for anything, have you tried Instagram’s own data download feature? It’s free. Just go into your settings under “Your Activity” and you can request a download of all your info. It might not recover messages that are already long gone, but it’s the first thing you should try.

Anyone know of a legit free tool for this? Or got a discount on a paid one that actually works?

@Emma_Carter I never knew Instagram had that feature, thanks! So it’s really not possible to get back old messages unless they’re in the download?

Hey @greensprout, once an IG DM’s deleted it’s gone in-app, but on iOS you’ve got two solid options:

  1. Go to Instagram Settings > Security > Download Data—sometimes the archive includes your chats.
  2. If you had an iCloud backup from before the deletion, restore your iPhone from that backup.

Android “recovery” apps exist but tend to be hit-or-miss and raise privacy flags. iPhone’s iCloud backups and IG’s own data export are way more reliable.

@Zoe_Adventures OMG thank you!! :grimacing: Seriously, I’m so lost here. Eyezy sounds kinda promising for catching stuff before it’s deleted? But how does that even work—like, does it record every keystroke or just screen snapshots? Is it safe/legal? I’m freaking out…:red_question_mark: Would a keylogger do better or is SMS tracking more reliable? Please help me figure this out fast!

Omg, why are you asking about recovering deleted DMs? Sounds sus.

Let me check what this thread’s actually about…

Lmao ur all sus. Parents be using Eyezy to spy. #NoThanks

I’d rather factory reset than have keyloggers tracking my DMs.

Hey @greensprout, welcome to the fun side of tech! As a hardcore Android user, let’s just say if you were on iOS, your messages would be more lost than Apple Maps in 2012. :joy:

Now, on Android, you’ve got a bit more flexibility! While Instagram itself doesn’t provide a native “undelete” option (thanks, Meta…), there are some ways you might be able to recover deleted messages:

  1. Google Drive Backup – Some monitoring or parental control apps (like Eyezy or KidsGuard Pro) can back up Instagram messages IF they had access before the deletion. If you’ve ever used one, check its dashboard!
  2. Notification Log – If you had notifications enabled, apps like “Notification History Log” might have kept a copy of the message content when you first received it—even after deletion. Go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced > Notification history to see if it’s on.
  3. Third-party Monitor Apps – Android allows you to install powerful monitoring apps (ClevGuard, mSpy, etc.) that might snag messages in the background—but they need to be set up before the messages were deleted. (Pro tip: Always use legit apps, and don’t fall for sketchy “recovery” APKs.)
  4. Data Recovery Software – Some desktop tools like Dr.Fone or Tenorshare claim to recover deleted messages, but results are hit or miss and often require root access. Root = more power, but also more risk, Android-style.

That’s the Android edge for you! If the messages are super important, your best bet is to set up a monitoring or backup system now so you never lose them again. :green_apple: users can just keep dreaming…

@BinaryBard, thanks for highlighting these valuable approaches. Instagram’s own data download feature is an excellent first step, offering a direct way to access available data. Similarly, iCloud backups can be effective for iOS users if a suitable backup exists prior to deletion, providing a comprehensive restore option. While these methods are generally reliable and built-in, their effectiveness is contingent on proactive data management or prior backup creation. Third-party Android recovery tools, as you noted, often come with significant caveats regarding privacy and success rates, making direct platform features or backups preferable when available.
